Smiles and Celebration (GCSE 2018)

23 August 2018

Celebration was in the air at Newport Girls’ High School as this year’s GCSE results were revealed. Around three quarters of results were graded 9-7 this year (A*-A) with 24 students achieving the equivalent of straight A*-A grades in all their subjects. Leading the way was Orla O’Byrne from Shrewsbury, who attained not only 9 GCSEs at Grade 9 but also an A* in Further Mathematics, placing her in the top 0.2% of the country. Progress scores were also high, showing that students at NGHS have added significant value to the point when they entered the school in Year 7.

This year’s cohort have bucked the national trend in STEM subjects by engineering some fantastic grades in science and maths.  Around a third of all girls at NGHS achieved the coveted Grade 9 in Physics and 82% of students who took the GCSE Further Maths (taken by the country’s most able mathematicians) attained an A**-A grade. Our Geographers were also celebrating with a clean swipe of GCSEs at Grades 9-6.

The core subjects of Mathematics and English achieved outstanding results with every single student achieving a strong pass (Grade 5 or above) in Mathematics and English and well over 90% attaining Grades 9-6 in these key subjects and every student achieving a merit or distinction in Spoken Language.

Headteacher, Mr Michael Scott is delighted for all of the Year 11 students: “This year’s results are testament to the hard work of our largest ever Year 11 cohort. With the encouragement of dedicated teachers and supportive families, our students have achieved grades they truly deserve across our academic curriculum, which includes compulsory modern languages, triple science and humanity subjects. At a time of upheaval in the grading system at GCSEs and a lot to cram into two years of study, our students have proven that they can achieve highly and have bright futures ahead of them. Well done to all our students on their strong performances.”

Most of our Year 11 students are returning to NGHS6 (our Sixth Form) and there are still a couple of places available to students joining Year 12 in September. Please visit our Sixth Form pages for more information.
