A-level 2023: Double the A*s!

17 August 2023

Newport Girls’ High School is celebrating twice as many top A* grades when compared to the last pre-Covid cohort. This summer sees a national return to pre-Covid grading and, in all, 20% of results at NGHS were graded A* (10% in 2019).

In total, two thirds of the 100-strong cohort achieved top grades in all their qualifications. At NGHS, almost every student takes 3 A-levels with a 5000-word Extended Project dissertation and this year we continue our renowned success with 40% of these projects attracting top A* grades.

In total, 71% of results were graded A*-B and 45% A*-A. This places NGHS once again as the top-performing school in the local area.

Particular congratulations are owed to students who achieved straight A* grades in all their subjects: Ananya Gaddam, Harriet Meechan and Padma Rangan achieved four A* grades and Anvita Ciras and Katie Wykes achieved 3A* grades. Emily Spencer and Anika Srinivasan also achieved 3A* and 1 A grade after taking four A-levels.

This cohort never sat their GCSEs owing to the pandemic so for most students it was a new experience in a formal exam setting. Mr Michael Scott, Headteacher, paid tribute to the class of 2023’s successes: “It has been a very anxious wait for our students and we are thrilled to see so many students achieve their potential. Today lots of students leave NGHS with the grades they need for university including a pleasing number to Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions. Many of them are off to their first choice university, but a growing number are joining apprenticeship routes, too.  What is clear is that all their hard work and determination has paid off and we wish them every success in the future.”

NGHS will shortly open applications for current Year 11 girls to join our sixth form. Keep an eye on our sixth form section of the website for more details.
