GCSE Record Smashed at NGHS!

Newport Girls’ High School’s Year 11s are celebrating a truly magnificent and record-breaking set of GCSE results. A jaw-dropping 90% of GCSEs were graded 7-9 (or A*-A); a figure which has not been seen before in the school’s history, even during the centre- and teacher-assessed grading scenarios of 2020 and 2021. As has been reported in the media today, the overall GCSE pass-rate and top-grade proportion has fallen nationally since the non-examined grades of the past two years, but it has actually increased at NGHS. 71% of results were Grade 8-9 or A* in the old calculation.

In the core subjects, 95% of students secured grades 7-9 in English Language with 93% achieving the same in maths and our Further Maths qualification saw 100% grade A*/A equivalent.  Each faculty has many reasons for celebration with a special mention to French which secured 100% of results at grade 7+ and Music which exceeded the school’s average for top grades. There are few schools where triple science is taken by every student. At NGHS this is the norm and 9 out of 10 students secured top 7-9 (A*-A) grades across all three sciences!

After last week’s stellar A-level performance which saw NGHS students attaining the highest grades (A*/A and A*-B) in the region, the Year 11 cohort were keen to show they meant business!

Provisional progress figures indicate that our Year 11 students achieved in excess of one grade higher, on average, than would be expected in their top eight results and it was particularly pleasing to see the tremendous results achieved by students who were particularly badly affected by the pandemic and personal medical conditions.

Headteacher, Michael Scott was thrilled with the results: “The NGHS Year 11 cohort of 2022 have always been a trend-setting year group and I am delighted to share their successes today. We knew this cohort were on track for great success and they have gone even further than this in their final examinations. Sheer talent, hard work and resilience, coupled with outstanding teaching, excellent pastoral systems and unfaltering support from home has led this cohort to truly phenomenal success. The future is very bright for them all and we look forward to welcoming many of the year group into our sixth form next week”.
