Newport Girls' High School

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

The PSHE department aims to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum which follows the PSHE association’s guidance of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships, living in the wider world.

In KS3, our focus is on helping students to develop self-awareness, positive self-esteem and confidence to be able to stay as healthy as possible, keep themselves and others safe, have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships, respect the differences between people and develop independence and responsibility.. Students have 1 lesson a week in Year 7 and 8. In KS4 (which begins in Year 9), students continue with this subject for 1 lesson a week, with a continued focus on the areas mentioned above as well as some additional work focussed on democracy, British Values and citizenship.

Outside of lessons, students have the opportunity to observe workshops that are run by Brook Advisory and Loudmouth Education which support our relationship and sex education curriculum through the delivery of workshops and theatre performances which also help to raise awareness of important issues that students face in society today.

The School is an early adopter for the new national PSHE strategy and is working hard to implement the changes ahead of the policy change in September 2020. The Learning Overviews below reflect this.
