Please find below a brief introduction to key staff at NGHS6 as well as our Head Girl Team.
Mr M J Scott
Mr Scott has been Head of Newport Girls' High School since 2018. A keen linguist, he still enjoys teaching German and with a part degree in Music, he is a keen advocate of the role that co-curricular activities play (pardon the pun!) in enabling students to be most successful, especially as academic prowess alone may not be sufficient in today's diverse and exciting world.
Prior to joining NGHS, Mr Scott was a Deputy Head on the Wirral where he had oversight of the sixth form and the UCAS process. He has over 10 years experience supporting students with UCAS applications for universities both in the UK and abroad. He also teaches two groups of EPQ in the sixth form and believes the qualification is hugely beneficial for future study at university or in the world of work.
Mr Scott has oversight of the sixth form as Headteacher. He enjoys meeting and talking to prospective students and finding out more about their interests, passions and future goals. No request is too silly nor problem too small - do get in touch if you have any questions about the School and Mr Scott will be pleased to answer them.
Miss S Webster
Miss Webster joined NGHS in September 2021 and oversees all aspects of Year 11-13. Together with Mrs Griffin, she works hard to ensure that every student is welcomed, supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential. Miss Webster teaches Geography and sixth form PSHE and looks forward to getting to know all of our sixth formers each September.
Mrs K Griffin
Head of Sixth Form
Mrs Griffin joined NGHS in 2018 as Head of Sixth Form. She teaches both History and Politics to A-level as well as PSHE to all students in Year 12. Mrs Griffin oversees the wellbeing and progress of all 180 sixth form students. She leads the Sixth Form team of staff and tutors and coordinates our UCAS programme. A senior member of staff with a wealth of experience leading the sixth form both at NGHS and in her previous school, Mrs Griffin is happy to meet with students or parents at any time and she also oversees the work of our Head Girl Team who aid transition to the school.
Mrs A Bailey
Sixth Form Administrator
Mrs Bailey has worked at NGHS since 2012 and has taken on a variety of administrative roles including as Fundraising Coordinator for the wonderful new sixth form building. Always keen to offer support to students who come to the Sixth Form Office, Mrs Bailey helps coordinate sixth form applications and face-to-face discussions for students and families as well as all the important UCAS administration to help students get their applications finished and sent off in a timely manner.
Mrs D Martin
Mrs Martin joined NGHS in 2019 in a new position as Wellbeing Officer for Years 11-13. A qualified PE teacher, she teaches a very limited timetable and therefore is available throughout most of the day to support students with any pastoral matters. Mrs Martin helps students to develop resilience and face any anxieties in a calm, measured way. She can signpost students to agencies and other staff within school to get additional support and liaises regularly with parents as/when necessary.
Mr O Pointon
Mr Pointon joined NGHS in 2018 and is our Sixth Form Achievement Coordinator. Mr Pointon teaches Psychology and RE to A-level. He oversees the academic elements of our Sixth Form, in particular target-setting, data and reporting. He also works to direct support for students who are struggling academically and coaches students in form time to manage their workload and achieve their full potential.
Mrs A Benoit
Special Needs Coordinator
Mrs Benoit has taught Art at NGHS since 2013. She is our Special Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) and works closely with any student who requires additional academic support. This may include extra time in examinations or access arrangements such as laptops and scribes. Mrs Benoit coordinates extra testing for dyslexia and works very closely with students, parents and families to manage individual pupil passports/learning plans. She also chairs a parent panel where new ideas are discussed between parents whose daughters are on our SEND register.
