Newport Girls' High School

Speed Networking Event

In March 2018, NGHS was delighted to host the first speed-networking event in the West Midlands. Working in collaboration with Telford & Wrekin Authority, we welcomed around 80 local employers who spoke to an ever-changing rotation of students. Our girls were asked to prepare questions and many important links were made, some of which led to offers of work placements and further support in that field of work.

A summary of the day from our Year 10s is shown below:

Amongst many other events held at NGHS so far this year,
the Careers Networking event was an opportunity for
students in years 8-13 to further their knowledge of possible
future careers through short, informative conversations with
employers from a wide range of fields; from creative writing
to town planning.
We were given the opportunity to question the 78
employers on topics that interested us. Whether that was
questioning what exactly a specific job entailed or what
degrees were required to pursue a particular career, every
conversation offered an insight into the more personal
experiences and struggles faced by adults within the world of
work. It was an opportunity we all made the most of and all
who participated considered the event a valuable experience.
For this we would like to thank our school and the
employers for being so accommodating. A particular thank
you must go to Mrs Gill, who put in so much effort.
